Hypoparathyroidism

Parathyroid glands are positioned behind the thyroid gland. They generate parathyroid hormone, which is involved in controlling the body's calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood.

What are the common symptoms

Low blood calcium levels are typically associated with the signs and symptoms of hypoparathyroidism. Symptoms and signs may consist of:

  • Tingling or burning in the lips, toes, and fingertips
  • Legs, foot, stomach, or facial muscles aches or cramping
  • Twitching or spasms in the hands, arms, and throat muscles, especially in the vicinity of the mouth
  • Weakness
  • Brittle nails, dry skin and hair

Risk factors

The following factors can raise the likelihood of developing hypoparathyroidism:

  • Recent neck surgery, particularly if the thyroid is involved
  • Family history of hypoparathyroidism
  • Having some autoimmune or endocrine diseases, such as Addison's disease
